About the Role
Barnardos are looking for a full-time permanent Aboriginal Family Support Worker for the Aboriginal Early Years Program based in Ultimo, 2007 

The Aboriginal Family Support Worker will be responsible for;
  • Provide a direct service to children, young people and families in need through regular home visiting (eg weekly) or at a place deemed suitable by the family
  • Conduct a SCARF assessment for each family referred to you and review the progress with the family in an appropriate timeframe. Ensure all written and electronic client records and files are kept in accordance with SCARF and Barnardos Open File Policy.
  • Refer families to external services where appropriate to meet the family’s needs.
  • Engage in proactive role modelling of positive parenting practices including communication with babies and young children and play
  • Maintain a child focus in your case work as well as supporting parents where ever possible to maintain or re-establish their parental role and home management responsibilities
  • Participate in existing supported playgroups for Aboriginal families where appropriate
  • Participate in interagency meetings and forums
  • Participate in the development and sustaining of joint working relationships with key agencies which may include joint facilitation of parenting groups and joint home visiting as required
  • Provide practical assistance (including financial literacy assistance) to alleviate poverty and disadvantage.
  • Monitor child protection issues, consult with your supervisor and act in accordance with The NSW Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998 and Barnardos Australia ‘Reporting of Child Abuse’ policy.

About You
This position is Aboriginal identified. To perform this role, it is essential that the person who holds the role be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that applicants are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders.

As an Aboriginal Family Support Worker, you will ideally have;
  • Demonstrated experience of working with families in need of support services.
  • Demonstrated experience of working with children and young people and their family in a child protection context and knowledge of current child protection legislation.
  • Demonstrated experience of working within Aboriginal Communities
  • Knowledge of the challenges for Aboriginal Families raising children in the Inner Sydney, Inner West and South East area
  • Knowledge of child development and parenting capacity.
  • Be flexible in your working hours and meet the families at a time that is most beneficial to a family (e.g. before and after school hours, if required)

Salary: Base $67,268 to $77,592 per annum plus leave loading plus superannuation.  Packaging available to receive $15,860 of your salary tax free. Motor vehicle packaging available on selected roles.

To be considered for roles with Barnardos you will need to have (or be willing to have conducted) a National Police Clearance and current Working with Children check Clearance (or APP number) and for the ACT a Drivers History Check, Working with Vulnerable People Card and CYPS Check.
