Recruitment agency profits going to good causes – Beyond Barbed Wire (BBW) program

abrs is Australia’s only charity owned recruitment agency. All net profit is returned to Barnardos to support additional funding needs for children, family and community services. One such example is the Beyond Barbed Wire (BBW) program in the Western NSW headed up Jodi Burnstein of Barnardos. This program provides mothers with opportunities to participate in parenting programs whilst incarcerated. Jodi explained that this service is important as it encourages and models nurturing behaviour for women, who may not have experienced nurturing behaviours in their own childhood. Parenting programs also provide relevant information and examples, which increase mothers’ knowledge of their child development and communication styles. Parenting education often results in more positive social connections among mothers’ in custody and contributes to learning about and practicing healthy relationships. Mothers in custody can use these connections to exchange parenting advice, provide emotional support to one another, and share resources. This Barnardos team have successfully achieved a 91% staying out of jail for their program participants.
